AGING

Lifesaving Mnemonics to Know. Mnemonic devices — a set of letters or associations that help you remember things — are indeed helpful. But did you know that sometimes, they could also save your life?

How to Feel Better in Less Than 15 Minutes. Take a brief meditation break. It’s simple: Sit quietly, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. When you get distracted, just bring your attention back to your breath. When you’re done, you could feel more positive and patient. That’s just what you need to shift the energy of your day and help you bounce back from stress.

HEALTH

10 Small Habits That Can Help You Lose Weight. One or two glasses of water before breakfast can set a positive tone for the rest of the day. Water is calorie-free and can help curb your appetite, potentially leading to a smaller breakfast portion. Moreover, staying hydrated boosts your metabolism, which helps your body burn calories more efficiently.

How to prevent and treat Lyme disease. Lyme disease is caused by bacteria that are transmitted by the small black-legged tick, also called the deer tick. Lyme disease is most common in the upper Midwestern and Northeastern regions of the U.S., but it can sometimes happen in other areas, too.

Numbers That Matter as Much as Your Weight. Body mass index uses your height to gauge if your weight is healthy, but even that’s not foolproof. Your body type, ethnic group, and muscle mass can change the meaning of the number. For example, if you start exercising regularly, you may gain weight as you build muscle. When you’re trying to lose weight to be healthier, there are other numbers you should pay attention to, too, instead of focusing only on the scale.

PAIN RELIEF

Blood Clot Symptoms to Know.  What’s a Clot? It’s a clump of cells and protein in your blood. A clot helps slow bleeding when you’re injured. It usually dissolves as you heal. But if it doesn’t, or if it forms when it’s not needed, it can clog up or completely block a blood vessel.

Ways to Relieve Back Pain. When you have back pain, sleeping can be hard. It can be a vicious cycle because when you don’t get enough sleep, your back pain may feel worse. A poor sleep position can also aggravate back pain. Try lying on your side. Place a pillow between your knees to keep your spine in a neutral position and relieve strain on your back. If you need to sleep on your back, slide a pillow under your knees. Be sure to sleep on a comfortably firm mattress.

MEMORY LOSS

Things That Raise Your Chances of Dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. About a third of people 85 and older show signs of the disease. The genes you inherit from your parents play a role at this age, but so do factors like diet, exercise, social life, and other health conditions. Dementia isn’t a regular part of getting older.

New study shows how exercise protects the brain from Alzheimer’s disease. Past studies show that specific lifestyle changes — such as getting more physical activity — may help lower a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease or slow its progression.

GOOD BOOKS TO READ

Here is a book to discuss and learn about the End Times. END TIMES: How to understand Bible prophecy: Are there Biblical signs that show us when Jesus will return

I have several other books you may be interested in. They cover photography, fishing, Christian studies, exercise, and Disc Golf.

FITNESS

If you’ve ever promised yourself that you would get back in shape just as soon as you could find the time, then the 7-Minute Workout may be for you.  It’s a short, rapid-fire series of exercises that use your body weight. Though it’s called the “7-Minute Workout,” you get maximum benefit from repeating the circuit at least three times.

Working Out When You’re Over 50. Let’s face it: A 50- or 60-year-old body isn’t the same as a 20-year-old one. You won’t be able to do the same things — nor should you. But exercise is key to your independence and a good quality of life as you age. So, what do you need to think about to be healthy without hurting yourself?

FOOD

Too much “good fat” tells the body to make more fat cells, study finds. A common fatty acid in olive oil, as well as many other plant oils, has been found to stimulate the body’s production of new fat cells, creating conditions that could, over time, lead to more fat storage and unintended weight gain. Until now, weight gain linked to this fatty acid was attributed to the high calorie content of foods that it’s found in.

Foods That Help or Harm Your Sleep. If you could pick foods that may help you get the best sleep possible, would you? And if you knew which foods may hinder your restful slumber, would you avoid them? Now’s your chance to learn just that for a good night’s sleep. Though the science is not solid, being mindful of what you eat and drink before bed may help.

GENERAL

Supplement Smarts: Best Ways to Take Different Vitamins. With hundreds of supplements available, it’s hard to believe that not every nutrient in whole foods has been captured in a capsule. That’s why eating a variety of healthy foods is the best way to meet your health needs. But if you’re low on a specific vitamin or mineral, or want to cover all bases with a daily MVM (multivitamin/mineral), these tips will help you get the most from it.
